An important Etruscan center with an original civilization, the town flourished through a combination of alabaster mines and its impregnable position on a high plateau enclosed by volcanic hills. It survived the Roman era but unfortunately, due to its relative isolation, was unable to keep pace with changing patterns of trade and today occupies less than a third of its ancient extent.
Everything in the town is made from the yellow-grey stone called 'panchino' famous in the area. The roads, towers, palaces, squares and austere city walls are all made from this and it is not unusual to find shells of rare beauty emerging. Many local crafters use alabaster as their medium of choice. While not a coastal town, Volterra Hotels will organize boat trips departing from the Etruscan Coast which is nearby and fascinating tours of olive farms and olive oil production.
Delightful and ancient tourist attractions await guests to Volterra Hotels. The most ancient of these include; the Roman Theatre which dates back to the tenth century BC; the Porta all'Arco, a gate built of massive volcanic rock in the 4th century; the Pinacoteca, a 14th century palace filled with great masterpieces of art; the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Medici Fortress. Voterra's city hall is probably the oldest in Tuscany while the Sacred Heart Museum and Etruscan Museum will delight any art lover's heart.
Volterra Hotels also provide easy access to Via Matteotti, the main street of the town filled with wonderfully decorated palaces and houses. La Vena di Veno where guests can sample a number of local wines each day accompanied by food and music and the Alabaster Workshop where beautiful stone is displayed are also close by.

While much of the architecture of Volterra Hotels dates back to the 15th century, hotels have been renovated and restored to provide all the modern amenities and facilities required by modern travelers. The Hotel La Locanda has been converted from an ancient Monastery of Nuns and a former owner in the 18thcentury decorated the front of the building with urns and tops of urns from the Etruscan time that represent fantastic animals and scenes of the trip to the inferno that were found when the site was excavated. The utmost care has been taken to maintain the atmosphere of historic buildings. Albergo Residence Villa Rioddi is a 15th century villa which has been exquisitely renovated to retain its elegant and classic structure.
